No instructions.

I've received a message saying that one of my pictures lacks a copyright notice. I will gladly correct this to match the other pictures I uploaded today, but HOW? I have read everything I can link to, but can't find instructions on how to do this simple thing, just warnings that if I don't, the picture will be deleted. There isn't even an answer in the FAQ. Grrrrr.

Likewise you warn that you won't answer unsigned questions - but how does one sign anything? Really, Wikipedia does take an awful lot for granted - or is it a deliberate ploy to discourage contributors? I'm not even sure if this is the way to contact you via this talk page. I have to agree that Wikipedia is incredibly difficult to follow and makes contributing (by people who are recognised experts on a particular subject) extremely difficult to the point that they won't bother. Wikipedia is failing to make contributing user-friendly and by having instructions and help pages that are very confusing and complicated it essentially restricts its content. No mistake made ... entry deleted

I recognized that many companies, also SME´s, have entries about their companies on wikipedia.

Because of that, I thought it might be a good idea to do so as well. I followed the instructions and set up a wikipedia-site for the company I work for. About an hour later I got the message that my entry was deleted because I was the only user who edited the entry and that it would be only an entry for advertising reasons. So I wondered whether I am allowed to create a wikipedia-site for my company? And I wondered why all other companies are allowed to? Is there any criteria for it?!

I would be very thankful if you would tell me which steps I did wrong, or better: how I can make an entry about the company I work for without erasure following.

Hello Filnik, though I don't quite get what was missing from the https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/File:KurtEisner1919.jpg file I uploaded, I indeed made a mistake: it seems the author died in June 8th 1940 but his works will not be in the public domain till the end of the year (I assumed it was 70 years from the date of his death). Thus, I'd be grateful if you could delete it for the time being. I will try to remember and add it back into Commons next year. A database error...

Dear Filnik , thank you for your message and reply . I can not give now a link because the issue was resolved, but I do not know by who. On July 25 the error still exists. I left a message with this error to Túrelio , on July 25 (I saw it in his gallery too), but he never found it. The message is in history (it was deleted in the meantime). Fixing the license and changing a file name to binomials

I'm having the same problem as some other folks - I can't see where to change or add the license to Multi-license with CC-BY-SA-3.0 and GDFL (recommended). I think I've been to every link there is and I still can't find it - can it really be that difficult to do? I would be more than happy to change it, but how? I can just wait a week and start over when the file has been automatically deleted, but I'd really like to know how to correct this.

Also, I would like to rename all my images that use English common names to the standard binomials. Should I change the name of the images from English to the binomial before uploading? The instructions for renaming a file say: "If you're not an admin, you can place the text {{rename|newname.ext|reason}} on the image description page. An administrator will perform the move, if it conforms to the guidelines described below."

Where exactly do I put "{{rename|newname.ext|reason}}"? There are at least two edit places to add it - I tried the top one and got an offsite third-party webpage! I also tried to upload the same image with the binomial name and I could not do that, so at my http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yellow-rumped_myrtle_warbler_02.jpg image, there are now 4 unwanted images while I was working out that this approach doesn't work.

It says I've "only used a template, not a license", but when I look at Commons:Choosing a license, I'm told that "If you don't want to read this and just want to know which license the Commons community recommends, choose one of the following: {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}}: "Copyleft (Multi-license GFDL, all CC-BY-SA)"; {{PD-self}}: "All rights released (Public domain or waiver if the PD release is invalidated)". I've already marked it with {{Own}} and with CC and GFDL licenses ({{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}{{GFDL-self}}), which seems to be pretty much what that page advises: what more is needed?! I think the Commons help pages on the issue of licensing seriously need revising, as I'm hardly a simpleton and I have trouble working out what hoops to jump through and boxes to tick. Bot tagging of files already marked for speedy deletion

Per Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests#File:Benton Burlesque, 1922.jpg, I though I'd suggest to you that it might be a good idea if your bot(s) skipped any files already tagged for speedy deletion (at least for tags like {{Bad name}} where the deletion is indeed likely to be speedy, maybe not for "delayed speedy" like {{Nsd}}/{{Nld}}/{{Npd}}). It just seems a bit pointless to warn people about problems with files that are likely to be gone by the time they see the warning. I am new to uploading pictures, so I don't know what the trouble is here. This photo was taken yesterday (23 August 2010), by me, in the British Museum galleries, as were the other files I have uploaded so far. It is absolutely my own copyright. I edited it (cropping, lightening etc.) in Photoshop, but I have also edited the others. I have chosen the 'recommended' licence option on all uploads so far. Hi! Your bot hunts down files without a license. I noticed that this file does not have a license File:Kvogur.jpg but it has not been tagged. Is {{Insignia}} on the skip list? I think that it should not be. Perhaps you could get your bot tho check the Category:Insignia and tag the files without a real license?

Need help with licencing

Hello Filnik i see that I've had some trouble with my logo uploading.... I still don"t get everything on this website, but I'm getting better everyday :) Anyway, about the incorrect licence: I used the choice list given when uploading the file and I messed up the licence type.... I should have used "logo" instead of "my own work"... I did the logo so it is my work in a way, but I suppose I "logo" is better...

On the other hand , I have another question, how do i erase an image I uploaded? In order to complete the article I'm writing I used the old logo (I hadn't finished the new one :) ) and now I would like to erase it, but it doesn't seem I can... If you can help me with the licence problem and this one, you'd save my day :D

ich sah heute, dass das SVG-Logo vom belgischen Busbetrieb De Lijn von Ihrem Bot gelöscht wurde, auf Grund von falscher Lizenz. Nun habe ich mich etwas schlauer gemacht und etwas genauer andere Logos auf dem deutschsprachigen Wiki angeschaut und den fehler behoben. Nun habe ich das Logo erneut hochgeladen, jedoch auf dem dt. Wiki.

Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Sie erneut prüfen könnten, ob nun das Logo nicht erneut gelöscht werden muss.

Ciao, vorrei contribuire su commons con la creazione di alcune carte tematiche. Si tratterebbe di lavori personali fatti con software GIS open source (gvSIG e GRASS). Il grosso problema è con la fonte dei dati che potrei scaricare da siti governativi (APAT, geoportale, etc...). checkimages.py

Hello! I am trying to update the script so that it could work in ru.wikipedia. I've added new translations, categories of license plates, etc. It works OK and tags images without license but I have one problem: when I use -duplicates paramater bot breaks when finds such a file. For example:

Ciao Filnik, dopo aver creato la suddetta categoria, ci ho improvvidamente caricato le immagini di due dipinti del Prado trovate sul web: 1) File:Museo del Prado S.Rosalia vanDyck.jpg e 2) File:Santa Rosalia Luca Giordano Prado.jpg .

Riguardandole ad alta risoluzione ho notato la presenza in sovrimpressione del logo del Museo. Non è presente la "C" del copyright, ma forse sarebbe più prudente eliminarle. Potresti dargli un'occhiata ed eventualmente ( sigh! mi dispiacerà moltissimo per il van Dyck, ma...) procedere alla loro "cancellazione immediata"? Hi Filnik, I was referred to you from my discussion at Commons:Help_desk#Can_admins_see_deleted_histories_across_language_wikis.3F. I was hoping you would be able to go to this image and look for the uploader's original "source" proving the image was licensed for use on Wikipedia. The image was eventually moved to File:Avril_Lavigne_Geneva_June_09_2005.jpg and I believe it to be a copyvio image, but I can't prove it. In addition, I have tried to contact the original photographer with no luck, but I emailed him a second time a few moments ago. Stemma comunale errato

Buongiorno Filnik, rappresento il comune di Collina d'Oro e scrivo a nome dell'esecutivo comunale (il Municipio) per chiedere un aiuto. Lo stemma presente sulla pagina del nostro comune è errato, è stato caricato nel 2008 ma non sappiamo esattamente da chi. Ora, trattandosi di uno stemma comunale la licenza di utilizzo è praticamente illimitata o regolata comunqe da leggi che ci consentono di pubblicarlo in 'libero utilizzo' essendone i legittimi proprietari. Purtroppo accade che molti utenti utilizzino questo stemma (errato) al posto di quello 'ufficiale' presente sul nostro sito istituzionale www.collinadoro.com e questo al Sindaco non piace per nulla. Avrei bisogno di sapere come posso correggere questo errore inviando (come, a chi, in che modo) lo stemma corretto da pubblicare su wikipedia. Mi rendo conto che malgrado io e i miei colleghi siamo degli utilizzatori pressochè giornalieri del sistema informativo più conosciuto del mondo, non sappiamo in realtà praticamente nulla sulla sua costruzione e modifica. La ringrazio già sin d'ora per ogni aiuto che potrà fornirci.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

license warning after renaming

Hi Filnik, after renaming a file, I sometimes change the resulting redirect to a {{Bad name}} to get it deleted by an admin. Especially after having typos in files just uploaded. And 5 minutes later your bot bashes me for not having a license. ...mi pare che questa immagine sia in violazione di copyright (vedi qui) e anche diverse altre dello stesso autore (esempio). In tutti i casi le immagini riportano come fonte riviste online con accesso libero, ma con tutti i diritti riservati. Ciao, ho un problema con la licenza della foto Marramao_FondazioneBasso.jpg nel senso che ho provato a specificare che, pur non essendo io l'autrice, avevo il permesso di usare l'immagine, tuttavia è stata ugualmente segnalata la violazione di copyright e il file è stato rimosso dalla pagina Wikipedia inglese in cui l'avevo inserito (Giacomo Marramao). Si tratta di una foto scattata per conto della Fondazione Basso, diretta dal prof. Marramao e l'ho ricevuta dal prof. stesso con la richiesta di usarla per la sua pagina sul Wikipedia inglese. Mi ha detto che il copyright è della Fondazione e mi ha autorizzata a pubblicarla online, tra l'altro informandomi che la stessa era già stata utilizzata per un paio di suoi libri come foto profilo. Quando ho caricato il file su Wiki Commons ho provato a specificare tutto ciò ma o non l'ho fatto secondo gli standard previsti oppure la mia spiegazione è stata ignorata. You have added a license tag now - yes - but only the author / creator / designer of the image can issue such a license.

I had a look in COM:L and COM:CT but couldn't find anything about Panama. In this case here see also COM:COA. Unless we know that the image is freely licensed or public domain we cannot use it. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 20:24, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Incomplete License

About all of my recent uploads of images,

I understand that to upload images that are for information purposes without permission is not accepted, but, It's just to add more a little more understanding or to make the article recognizable for the readers, in no way I want to harm the companies, I just know alot about retail and well adding an image of a company logo to be recognized by viewers can be considered a good thing, correct?

Comunque l'ho inserita e ho aggiunto ...reale... nella descrizione... Per le immagini 2 e 3 le ho sostituite con altre più adatte e quindi vanno cancellate...

Copyright problems about a file I uploaded, although consent was sent in due form

Dear Filnik,

You have requested copyright information about a file I uploaded, <File:Guido Haazen Selfportrait.jpg>. In addition, all kinds of warning signs and messages have been attached to that file, lots of it in jargon I do not understand, but also including a passage I do understand: “This media file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file will be deleted seven days after this template was added: (1 February 2012).”

But I have done absolutely everything I thought I could do to provide WikimediaCommons with that information, and I am at my wits’ end to explain what went wrong. I will tell you the whole story of what I did.

I first corresponded with the copyright holder of the picture, and at my request he gave it to me, for the express purpose of using it in an article I am writing for the Dutch-language Wikipedia. I told him about the advantage of putting it on WikimediaCommons, I told him about the strictness of all Wikipedia projects regarding copyright, and he assured me he would cooperate. One more thing about this correspondence: we are both speakers of Dutch, so our correspondence was in Dutch.

Obviously I had his permission. But this being the first time I planned to upload a picture I did not take myself, I wrote to <permissions-commons AT wikimedia DOT org> in advance. I received a reply (from an OTRS volunteer who signed her e-mail, but whose name I must not divulge on this open-access page) which contained the following passage: “If we are provided with a clear statement that the copyright holder is releasing this content for redistribution under an allowable license, then the content may be used on Wikimedia projects. The email template at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CONSENT> can be used if needed.”

So, since I had already obtained the copyright holder’s permission, I followed the procedure outlined in the section “When permission is confirmed” on <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requesting_copyright_permission>:

(1) I uploaded the image.

(2) I had the copyright holder send his consent to <permissions-commons AT wikimedia DOT org>, using the form suggested by my OTRS correspondent. I also made sure he added the picture itself as well as the URL of the file I had uploaded. As to the additional requirements in this second point of “When permission is confirmed”, I had him summarize our correspondence mentioned above. (It would have made no sense to include it, since it is all in Dutch.). — He sent me a copy of his e-mail, so I know his consent was sent in due form.

(3) I added the OTRS pending template (between double braces, naturally) to the description page.

I do hope you can solve the problem. I am sure you understand that to have done my best to make sure there would be no copyright problems, and then to find that there are is very discouraging. Polla ta deina (talk) 11:13, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Can't find the right license

Hi!

My friend John Quinlan sent me a photo via e-mail to which he owns the copyright, and he encouraged me to share it as widely as possible, releasing it to the public domain. I uploaded it here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Model_John_Quinlan_in_Calvin_Klein_65.jpg but it does not have a license attached as I paged through hundreds without finding any that said "For a recent work released into the public domain."

Nikbot issue

Hi. User:Russavia uploaded File:Air India Boeing 747-437 d'Silva.jpg. A few minutes after that upload, I edited the file and uploaded a new version. Nikbot toddled along a few minutes later, slapped it with {{no license}} and left me a message. Would be a whole lot more useful to leave a message for the original uploader instead. This has happened twice recently, and had I not manually copied Nikbot's message to the original uploader's talk page, they would have gotten no notice that you'd been through. Sort of like getting a traffic ticket and not finding out about it until they arrest you for non-payment. – JBarta (talk) 06:41, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Obvious copyright violations

Hello,

I think that obvious copyright violations (images with Google/Internet/Facebook/etc. as source, CD/DVD/book covers, posters, images from agencies (Getty/etc.), promo images, logos, etc.) should not be tagged with a missing license template, as your bot does. They should be tagged as {{Copyvio}}. That would greatly help the work of admins and others trying to separate the good from the bad. Thanks, Yann (talk) 14:35, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Filnik, do you know whether Nikbot warns the uploader of a file whenever it marks a file? We've found a situation in which a Nikbot marked a file as not having a valid license but the uploader was not warned and couldn't fix the issue before the file was deleted? Dear Filnik, the robot concluded that the source is missing for the file I uploaded. I found the file on the internet (a photo of Pavel Branko, by his son, created in 1977). I gave the URL of the webpage where I found the file, and the URL of the file. Plus the license. If I put that info in the wrong place on the upload page, could you perhaps help me? Could you please explain...

You deleted File:Kurdistan caravan كوردستان.jpg, about five years ago. I see no obvious clue as to why it would be considered a copyvio.

Back when I uploaded it from flickr I left a note on the flickr contributors's description page for that image, thanking them for using a CC license, and telling people the URL where they could find the image on the commons.

It showed up on my flickr "recent activity" list, because someone else left a note on that description page.

Your deletion log entry says the image was a copyvio -- but it doesn't point to a discussion where that copyvio concern was discussed.

• No discussions link to the image.
• If some third party tagged it as a copyvio they did not follow the guideline of leaving me a heads-up on my talk page -- a serious problem, IMO.
• Tineye.com doesn't find any versions not on flickr

I know it has been been five years, but do you remember how you came to be convinced it was a copyvio?

If there is a good explanation I will update my comment on that flickr page, explaining why it was deleted from the commons. Geo Swan (talk) 00:08, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
