Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File:Maître de Rieux Saint Antoine de Padoue (RA 555 B).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:Martin Beauté (63 6 1).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Thanks for uploading File:Jean-Antoine Houdon - Bélisaire - Musée des Augustins - 2004 1 208.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Jean-Antoine Houdon - Bélisaire - Musée des Augustins - 2004 1 208.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Or better: No license! The photo is copyrighted. The file description must give a license to show under what conditions people can reuse the photos. --Martin H. (talk) 16:46, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Cordialement, — Racconish Tk 16:32, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Nonza Tour Paoline (2).jpg.
Thank you. |

Lampes à huile
[edit]Bonjour Christelle,

[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Evelyne Ugaglia par Jean-François Peiré.jpg.
Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

If you decide to move the category, you have to correct the templates into the files and move the files, too. The museum's categories are based on templates and the files can't be moved automatically... somebody must do it file after file. Thanks for understanding :-) Wieralee (talk) 22:47, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Description des objets du Musée Saint-Raymond
[edit]Bonsoir,
Cordialement
Piero~commonswiki (talk) 06:33, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
PS : pour la question de la hierarchie de la catégorie *Collections of Musée Saint-Raymond by inventory number*, je vous propose plutôt
- Category:Objects by ID
- Category:Museum collections by inventory numbers (renommant l'actuelle Category:Categories by inventory number, ou en l’insérant entre les deux)
- Category:Collections of Musée Saint-Raymond by inventory number
- Category:Musée du Louvre:Inventory (par exemple)
- Category:Museum collections by inventory numbers (renommant l'actuelle Category:Categories by inventory number, ou en l’insérant entre les deux)
Piero~commonswiki (talk) 10:58, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

My Mini Factory files with license problems
[edit]Hello Christelle Molinié, while reviewing uploads licenses, I found more files by My Mini Factory that were not published under Creative Commons. Since I saw they are available to change the license, I thought about contacting you before labeling those files as unfree to fix it. Here are the files I encountered at the moment:
- File:13-msr-unknown-bust-3-10.stl
- File:15-msr-bust-of-a-young-man-10.stl
- File:18-msr-bust-of-a-woman-2-10.stl
- File:19-msr-unknown-bust-4-5.stl
- File:20-msr-unknown-bust-10-repaired.stl
Please ping me when licenses are changed, and I'll process the license review. Thanks. --Chiyako92 (talk) 17:02, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Chiyako92 It concerns about 130 models... They are part of the Scan the World project founded by Jonathan Beck who agreed to publish them under free license on My Mini Factory which allowed us to import them on Commons. I don't think that we can use the CC licence on this platform. But anyway I really don't understand what distinguishes the legal notice on My Mini Factory (maintain licence, credit the designer and commercial use allowed) from the CC BY-SA license. Would the solution be for Jonathan Beck to certify that these models are CC BY-SA licensed ?--Christelle Molinié (talk) 21:58, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hmm, I took note of those five files a couple of days ago and commercial use wasn't allowed; I guess it was changed before messaging you (my bad, I didn't recheck). As it is, the legal notice on My Mini Factory is fine, there's no need for a certification. --Chiyako92 (talk) 08:44, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Chiyako92. Okay, now I understand better. Indeed after your first alert I checked all the files and asked Jonathan Beck to change some of the licenses. Have a nice week-end. --Christelle Molinié (talk) 18:28, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Atelier-Wikiconcours-2019-MSR-1.jpg.
Thank you. |

Thank you. |

Copyright status: File:Journal-Anne-Frank.jpg
[edit]Copyright status: File:Journal-Anne-Frank.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Journal-Anne-Frank.jpg.
Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Capture d'écran céramiques grecques du MSR via Crotos.JPG
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Capture d'écran céramiques grecques du MSR via Crotos.JPG, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File:Paul Dutouit - Les Fiançailles - Musée des Augustins - RA 2020.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys
[edit]Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.
To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.
- A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
- A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!
Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 10:24, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Musée Saint-Raymond, D 20013 1 1. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion).
